In December, Kate Hudson and Muse frontman Matt Bellamy called it quits after four years, ending their engagement.

Now, the 36-year-old Rock the Kasbah star is opening up about why she and the 37-year-old singer broke up.

"Relationships ending are painful, and you can choose to carry that or you can choose to reframe it," Hudson said in an interview with Allure for the November issue. "If Matt and I had a great relationship, we would still be together, but we chose to move on because we had different visions of how we wanted to live our lives."

Hudson and Bellamy began dating in 2010, and in April 2011 the couple got engaged. Three months later, Hudson gave birth to the couple's first child together, Bingham Hawn Bellamy, now 4 years old. Hudson has another son, 10-year-old Ryder, from her previous marriage to musician Chris Robinson, singer for The Black Crowes.

Despite going their separate ways, Hudson revealed that she hasn't closed the door on sustaining an amicable relationship with her ex.

"[It] doesn't mean, though, that we can't rebuild something that would be the best thing for the kids," Hudson shared.

According to the actress, the couple have put the emotional well-being of their children before anything else.

"We said, 'We need to try to create something for the kids where they feel like they're gaining something rather than losing something,'" Hudson shared, adding that it was a "seamless transition" for their family.

"Kids just want to see their parents be cool. Everybody's cool; everybody's good," Hudson said.

Hudson added that the motivation to keep up a united front for their kids came from her own childhood experiences and upbringing.

"Being someone who has come from a broken family and has a stepfather, I really benefited from having that very consistent [presence] in my life," Hudson recounted. "And it's something I am mindful of and want in my life."

The Oscar-nominated actress has been making the most of the months since their split, working hard to stay healthy and phenomenally fit. She's also recently been romantically linked to Derek Hough and Nick Jonas. Check out the video below to see more.
