Reese Witherspoon was honored at the 29th American Cinematheque Awards in Los Angeles, California on Friday, and spoke with ET about the possibility of a third installment in the Legally Blonde series.

Recently, the 39-year-old actress and producer got fans excited when she hinted that she might reprise her role as Elle Woods at some point in the future, and that she has a great idea for the plot of the third film.

"I know people got excited about that," Witherspoon said, admitting, however, that nothing has actually been set in stone.

"I don't know," she explained. "The screeners wrote me and they said they were going to think about it."

In Hollywood, that's about as far from actually happening as you can get -- but that doesn't mean it's not possible. After all, the Oscar-winning star thinks the world is ready for a new film about the lovable and self-possessed attorney Elle Woods.

"I think it's a really great time to talk about women in politics because we need more women in politics," Witherspoon shared. "We're 50 percent of the population but we're only 17 percent of the government. We need some balance there."
