If there was one newsmaker of 2015, it was Caitlyn Jenner.

The former Olympian made headlines when she came out as a
transgender woman. Now she’s being recognized alongside her I Am Cait pals, Candis Cayne and Jen
Richards, in Out magazine’s year-end
portfolio
, honoring voices in the LGBT community.

The reality series, which documented her transition, also
showed how the transgender community embraced Jenner as she surrounded herself
with mentors and new friends.

In a new interview with the Out, Jenner credits the Vanity
Fair
cover
for helping her cross that bridge. “I have been on the outside
of that community, until four months ago basically,” she says. “I’ve never,
ever been able to talk to anybody. I didn’t meet my first trans person until I
did the show … It’s tough for me to realize that finally, after all of this
time, I’m part of the community.”

While there have been a number of landmark moments in Jenner’s
journey, one of the most important has been getting her name and gender legally
changed
.  While she subtly celebrated on
Instagram with a smiley photo of her Starbucks coffee, Jenner reveals that it
was an emotional day.

“Here we are -- honestly never knowing if this day would
ever come. In some ways, it’s a little sad,” Jenner says. “Bruce was a good
guy, did a lot of good things, raised a tremendous family and wonderful kids.
But I just couldn’t play that game any longer.”

Jenner even admits she became overwhelmed by the news. “I
actually cried a little bit about it,” she says. “I was on the golf course, off
playing by myself. It was very exciting, but such a head trip.”

“I’m so terribly excited about the future,” Jenner added. “I
have so many things to do. I feel like I have a place in life.”

In addition to being named Newsmaker of the Year by Out, Glamour
also named Jenner one of its Women of the Year and will honor her during the
magazine’s annual celebration on Monday night.

It’s also shaping up to be a busy week in New York City for
the reality star as ET has also confirmed that she’ll be attending the Victoria’s
Secret Fashion Show
, which will feature Kendall Jenner on the runway.
