Lamar Odom still has a long way to go when it comes to his recovery.

Khloe Kardashian gave an update on the 36-year-old former NBA star's health on Monday while promoting her new book, Strong Looks Better Naked, in Los Angeles. The 31-year-old reality star told The Insider that Lamar is still having trouble processing the events of the last three weeks, including the birthday party she planned for him at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center last Friday.

"I don't know if he can right now," Khloe candidly responded when asked if Lamar has been able to show her gratitude for sticking close to his side. "Like, I don't know if he fully understands everything, but I know he is grateful... and I'm not doing it for validation. I'm not doing it to get praise back."

Still, she said Lamar does understand that she's currently dating 26-year-old NBA pro James Harden.

"He understands I'm dating James, but it's not like -- he's not thinking about a relationship," she explained. "Like, he can barely think about himself right now, if that makes sense."

A source close to Khloe tells ET that Lamar has been able to speak, but not in full sentences. Another source tells us that "Lamar is speaking and is able to communicate, but it’s obvious confusion."

"He's doing better every day, for sure, which is a blessing, but it's going to be a long road and he has to walk that road," Khloe herself told ET on Monday. "It's going to be a long time."

Khloe admitted that she called off her divorce to Lamar last month so that she can help make medical decisions on his behalf, rather than for romantic reasons.

"I'm married for a multitude of reasons, but it's not intimate reasons," she explained. "It's more for medical, and also to help with a lot of other things to do medically. With his mental strength and everything like that, it was the best choice to make at the time."

Though Lamar obviously faces intense rehabilitation in the future, the athlete has been showing signs of improvement. Last week, a source told ET that the athlete is now able to walk with the help of a walker and people holding him up.

Khloe also seems to be slowly but steadily getting back to her own personal life. A source told ET last Thursday that Khloe doesn't feel the need to be by her ex's side at all times anymore, and has begun sleeping at her home more often now. On Sunday night, she stepped out with James to Lure nightclub in Hollywood, California, marking their first appearance together since Lamar's medical crisis.
