Sam Smith splurged on a series of artistic tattoos recently -- and the fresh ink might just reveal more about his mood than you might expect.

The 23-year-old "Stay With Me" singer shared photos of his four new tattoos to Instagram on Monday, and explained the meaning behind each piece of body art.

Perhaps the one that stood out the most was a tattoo of the word "alone" written on his arm.

While the tattoo may lead some to think Smith might be in a dark emotional state, the singer assured fans, "This is just me being a melancholy twat haha."

"I do see it as a small positive thou," Smith elaborated in the caption. "No longer lonely... Just alone... Which is ok."

During his inking session with Ukraine-born artist Stanislava "Miso" Pinchuk, Smith also got the word "honesty" written across his other arm.

"This is what I promise to be in my music," Smith explained. "It's what I live by."

Smith also showed off a few minimalist tattoos he got on his fingers, including an equality sign on his wedding ring finger -- symbolizing his "views on gay marriage and equality for all" -- as well as a similar looking symbol on his right hand, which was "inspired by one of the oldest tattoos ever found on a mummified body that was found buried alone in the ice."

Smith will have plenty of time to enjoy his new ink (and think up some more designs for the future) during his upcoming hiatus from music.

"I am sad, but also it feels right," Smith recently told ET, regarding his plan to temporarily step out of the spotlight. Check out the video below to hear more from the "Writing's on the Wall" singer about his well-deserved break.
