Get your first look at The Get Down, a new musical series from Baz Luhrmann. The show -- which stars rising newcomer Shameik Moore (Dope), Jaden Smith and veteran actor, Jimmy Smits -- will tell the story kids living in 1970s New York City through a blend of disco, punk, and hip-hop.
Netflix’s first trailer for the series, which will debut sometime this year, focuses heavily on the music and the talents of its young cast. In addition to Moore and Smith, Justice Smith (Paper Towns), Herizen Guardiola, Skylan Brooks (Southpaw), and Tremaine Browne, Jr. fill out the cast of inner-city kids. Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito rounds out the cast as Pastor Ramon Cruz.
The Get Down, which was first announced in 2015, is a concept that Luhrmann has reportedly been developing for the past ten years. Netflix describes it as “a mythic saga of how New York at the brink of bankruptcy gave birth to hip-hop, punk and disco.” And for anyone who is a fan of Luhrmann will appreciate the show’s grand style.
The series is the latest acting gig for Smith, who last appeared in After Earth with his father Will. Off screen, the actor has been busy modeling, most recently as the face of Louis Vuitton’s womenswear campaign.
While this show is about the '70s, Moore previously starred in Dope, which was a showcase of '90s Los Angeles. Watch as the actor and his co-stars relive their favorite moments of the decade:
