"I am beginning a new journey, on Instagram, to walk with you along the path of mercy and the tenderness of God," he tweeted.

In his first-ever Instagram pic, Francis (@Franciscus) is seen kneeling on a church pew bench in prayer.

"Pray for me," he captioned it in nine different languages.

Kevin Systrom, Instagram CEO and co-founder, made a visit to the Vatican, where he witnessed the Pope post his first gram.

"Watching Pope Francis post his first photo to Instagram today was an incredible moment," Systrom wrote on his own Instagram page. "@franciscus, welcome to the Instagram community! Your messages of humility, compassion and mercy will leave a lasting mark."

Last month, the two met up at the Apostolic Palace where they discussed the "power of images to unite people across borders, cultures and generations." Seeing as the 79-year-old papal already has quite the impressive social media following on Twitter -- 8.9 million fans! -- we can only guess that his Instagram account will be just as popular.

After all, it only took four hours for him to get a second post up.
