The numerous tributes to Prince – including Jennifer Hudson, Stevie Wonder and Erykah Badu - at the BET Awards were the only proper way to honor the iconic musician, according to famed R&B music producer Jimmy Jam.

"The whole show, in a way, is a tribute to Prince," the 57-year-old music legend told ET's Kevin Frazier on the BET Awards silver carpet at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday. "It's tough to just do one tribute to Prince, I mean you can't.

For Jam, born James Samuel Harris III, he honored the Purple Rain star's memory with a bit of dramatic wardrobe flair.

"I have just a little purple in my wardrobe tonight, because he's with me everywhere I go," shared Jam, who was one of Prince's longtime friends and confidants. "I just think it's gonna be just a night of outpouring."

The artist also threw a bit of shade at Madonna's tribute to Prince at the Billboard Music Awards in May, which drew quite a bit of hate from fans who didn't appreciate the Rebel Heart singer's performance of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U" and her "Purple Rain" duet with Wonder.

Jam explained ahead of time that one of the BET Awards' Prince tributes would feature "the same song that we saw on another award show that was done not quite as well, shall we say." Hudson went on to sing "Purple Rain" during the show.

However, he avoided calling Madonna out by name when asked about a tweet the BET Awards posted minutes after her BBMAs performance, promising a much better tribute.

The tweet contained a 15-second promo clip showing Prince's iconic symbol and concluded with the following message, "Yeah, we saw that. Don't worry. We got you," appearing across the bottom.

"I think you will understand the greatness of the man tonight. Not only from the songs you will hear, but also the people performing the songs who have all obviously been touched by him," Jam explained. "It's going to be a great night of really celebrating an extraordinary career and an extraordinary life."

Prince was among a number of artists Jimmy Jam and his producing partner, Terry Lewis, worked with during their careers -- another is the iconic Janet Jackson, who is currently expecting her first child with husband Wissam Al Mana.

Jam addressed the 50-year-old Unbreakable singer's pregnancy, sharing, "Janet's doing wonderful… I talked to her today, she's doing great. She's keeping cool and keeping calm."
