Warren Gates dies, following auto accident.
The Los Angeles Coroner's office has confirmed to ET the death of WARREN GATES, the 89-year-old man who failed to yield to oncoming traffic and collided with GARY COLLINS' vehicle on Tuesday, Oct. 23. He died on Friday, Dec. 7.
Collins will not be charged in the death of the Gates, as the L.A.P.D. had determined that the accident was the fault of Gates at the time of the accident.
Collins, when hit by the Toyota, swerved and hit two parked cars. When officers arrived at the scene, they smelled alcohol on Collins' breath. They initiated field sobriety tests that he failed.
At that time, the L.A.P.D. released the following statement: The accident was not Mr. Collins' fault, but he was arrested because the officers smelled alcohol on his breath. Mr. Collins was arrested for misdemeanor DUI.
Collins has since pled no contest to DUI in a Van Nuys, CA, court and was sentenced. The judge sentenced Collins to 48 months of probation. The court also ordered that he spend either 96 hours in Los Angeles County jail and pay a $500 fine or serve 16 days in jail with a credit for two days already served.
In addition, Collins was ordered to pay numerous fees, perform 100 hours of community service, enroll and participate in an 18-month second offender drug and alcohol program, and attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. The court further ordered that his car be impounded for three days.
Collins acknowledged in court that he had been previously convicted of DUI in 2004 in Malibu, CA.
