ET confirms the news that Pets of Bel Air, which has reportedly sold pooches to both PARIS HILTON and BRITNEY SPEARS, has been closed down temporarily due to expired permits.
The store will have a chance to re-open in 48 hours if they can provide Los Angeles Animal Services officials with current permit documentation and veterinary records for the pets in their inventory.
Lt. TROY BOSWELL, an officer with the Special Operations arm of Los Angeles Animal Services, was on the scene at the pet store today, and told ET: "We're checking the health of the animals that are in there. We're checking to see if there's anything illegal in there. To this point we've found nothing that indicates anything is awry, other than the permit status."
The Humane Society of the United States released a statement Tuesday that claims that employees of Pets of Bel Air "routinely deceived customers by falsely claiming that all puppies sold at the store, which is frequented by Hollywood celebrities, are raised by private breeders and that the store doesn't buy from puppy mills."
According to the HSUS, the organization conducted a months-long investigation which uncovered "evidence that many of the puppies sold there did come from puppy mills -- factory-like operations where the dogs are kept in barren cages and treated like production machines." The HSUS says the store sold puppies from mills in the Midwest.
Lt. Boswell said, however, that the officials were not shutting down the store due to puppy mills: "We're not dealing with the puppy mill allegation. That's more of a Humane Society situation. We're more focused on the permit aspect, and just making sure that the animals they sell are healthy and clean."
Boswell also tells ET that his department has no jurisdiction over puppy mills that are not located in the city of Los Angeles.
Pets of Bel Air declined to be interviewed by ET.
