They're four sexy, ambitious New Yorkers dripping in designer labels. Now "Cashmere Mafia," ABC's new quartet of killer babes, seems poised to pick up where "Sex and the City" left off when it premieres at 10 p.m. on Sunday, January 6. Did we mention that stylist PATRICIA FIELD, who so famously outfitted SARAH JESSICA PARKER and the "SATC" girls, is also the costume designer for "Cashmere"?
"She is remarkable," says series star LUCY LIU. "She turns everything upside down and then belts it and it's perfect. She could make a paper bag look great and modern and sleek."
So does that mean we'll be seeing more oversized flowers and shorts and stilettos combos on this series? Not likely. Each of these women are smart, savvy business grads in their 30s and 40s.
"They all went to business school together, and now they're professionals and have worked their way up and suddenly are all in these positions of power," reveals FRANCES O'CONNOR ('Bedazzled').
Frances plays an investment banker with two young kids. Lucy plays a hard-nosed publishing exec, BONNIE SOMERVILLE ("The O.C.") is the CEO of a cosmetics company, and MIRANDA OTTO ("The Starter Wife") is a perfectly dressed, hotel CEO who seems to have the ideal marriage, but is really hiding a secret from her three best pals.
"The actual truth is there's a lot of compromise in the relationship, and my husband has a rather wandering eye. That's a bit of a secret from my girlfriends. He's not actually the perfect husband."
The fun is in seeing how these different personalities deal with infidelity, competition and shifting gender roles. Miranda, who played DEBRA MESSING's best friend in the TV movie "The Starter Wife," giggles, "I was attracted to the whole storyline -- women in New York, very strong, powerful women. I like characters who are gutsy and just go after things and are really bold. I guess I'm not like that in my own life!"
