The casts of 'No Country For Old Men' and "The Sopranos" whack the competition.
Hollywood's best and brightest braved the rain to celebrate the Screen Actors Guild 75th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
The COEN BROTHERS' neo-noir Western 'No Country For Old Men' won the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture award, besting 'American Gangster,' '3:10 to Yuma,' 'Hairspray' and 'Into the Wild.' Star JOSH BROLIN commented that, "It is a risky movie" representing "a cornucopia of change" for actors, and joked, "The Coen Brothers are freaky little people, and we did a freaky little movie whether you like the ending or not."
As expected by many, DANIEL DAY-LEWIS earned his second-ever Best Male Actor in a Leading Role statuette for his role as a conflicted oil man in 'There Will Be Blood.' Ruminating over his win, the star acknowledged his co-nominees (GEORGE CLOONEY, RYAN GOSLING, EMILE HIRSCH and VIGGO MORTENSEN) and chose to dedicate his Actor statuette to the late HEATH LEDGER. "The thing that gave me a sense of wonderment and renewal," he began, "[has] always been the work of other actors ... that sense of regeneration; Heath Ledger gave it to me."
JULIE CHRISTIE won the Best Female Actor in a Leading Role for her performance as a woman being gradually consumed by Alzheimer's Disease in 'Away From Her,' her first SAG win. "It's lovely to receive an award from your union, especially at a time when we are reminded how important unions are," she said, singling out her writer-director SARAH POLLEY and jesting, "If I've forgotten anybody, it's because I'm still in character." Her competition was CATE BLANCHETT, MARION COTILLARD, ELLEN PAGE and ANGELINA JOLIE.
JAVIER BARDEM notched another one for 'No Country For Old Men,' picking off the Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role award for his killer role. "To receive this is totally unbelievable," he said humbly, sharing the honor with his co-stars, the Coen Brothers and his fellow nominees.
RUBY DEE surprised the crowd with her Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role win for 'American Gangster,' her first nom and win. She beat out CATHERINE KEENER, AMY RYAN, TILDA SWINTON and Cate Blanchett. The veteran star acknowledged late partner OSSIE DAVIS and remarked that some of the film's scenes were shot in the neighborhood where she grew up, noting, "Part of me forever came from that place and that place comes from me."
"The Sopranos" whacked the competition in the TV Drama categories, with the Guild honoring the mob series' swan song with the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series award, their second-ever win in the category. The HBO show beat out "Grey's Anatomy," "Mad Men," "The Closer" and "Boston Legal."
Additionally, JAMES GANDOLFINI and EDIE FALCO each won Best Actor in a TV Drama Series. Falco picked up her third statuette for her performance in the mob series and declared, "I have fallen in love with these people and I don't know how to walk away from that. Nobody is luckier than me." Gandolfini grabbed his fourth statuette for his iconic role and said, "This is our last official act as Sopranos together. Here's to you guys, thank you very much."
The stars of "30 Rock" represented the TV Comedy category, with TINA FEY and an absent ALEC BALDWIN winning the Best Actress and Actor in a Comedy Series statuettes. Celebrating her first SAG win, Tina joked, "I want to thank anyone in the Screen Actors Guild for considering me an actor at all," adding self-effacingly that her scenes with Baldwin "are kind of like watching FRED ASTAIRE dancing with a hat rack."
But it was the cast of "The Office" that nabbed the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series award -- their second SAG win -- forcing "30 Rock," "Entourage," "Desperate Housewives" and "Ugly Betty" back to their cubicles.
KEVIN KLINE was also singled out for his performance in the TV movie "As You Like It," as was QUEEN LATIFAH for her performance in the TV movie "Life Support."
Veteran star CHARLES DURNING was honored by BURT REYNOLDS and his current "Rescue Me" co-star DENIS LEARY with the SAG Life Achievement Award, saying, "Thanks to all of you, I am living my dream."
Just days after Heath Ledger tragically passed away, the 'Brokeback Mountain' star was remembered in memoriam alongside such screen luminaries as MERV GRIFFIN, CHARLES NELSON REILLY, BRAD RENFRO, JOEY BISHOP, ROSCOE LEE BROWNE, ROBERT GOULET, MARCEL MARCEAU, BEVERLY SILLS, JANE WYMAN, DEBORAH KERR, SUZANNE PLESHETTE, TOM POSTON and LUCIANO PAVAROTTI.
And star presenters celebrating SAG's 75th anniversary included TOM CRUISE, KATE HUDSON, MATTHEW McCONAUGHEY, TOMMY LEE JONES, STEVE CARELL, JOSH BROLIN, MICKEY ROONEY, JOHN TRAVOLTA, NIKKI BLONSKY, ZAC EFRON, DEBRA MESSING, SALLY FIELD, REBECCA ROMIJN, WILLIAM PETERSEN, HOLLY HUNTER, JAMES SPADER and VANESSA WILLIAMS.
