It will be 10 returning castaways against 10 long-time fans of the show when "Survivor: Micronesia -- Fans vs. Favorites," premieres Thursday, Feb. 7.
So which of the "Survivor: Micronesia" players has the advantage? The ones who have already played the game, or the ones who are still a mystery? Everyone knows the favorites --CIRIE FIELDS, JONATHAN PENNER, ELIZA ORLINS, AMANDA KIMMEL, JONNY FAIRPLAY, JAMES CLEMENT, PARVATI SHALLOW, OZZY LUSTH, AMI CUSACK and YAU-MAN CHAN -- and the game that they played their first time out.
"I think if you're a favorite, you have a big target on your back," says series host JEFF PROBST. "Everybody's afraid of James. They know he could've won it last time if he hadn't made such a blunder with the Immunity Idol. If you're a fan, nobody knows you. Nobody knows ERIK REICHENBACH is athletic; nobody knows JASON SISKA grew up on an island."
Jeff feels that for a favorite to become the Sole Survivor and win the $1 million dollar grand prize, they better have a "Plan B." It won't be enough for Ozzy to use his athleticism to win challenges, for Parvati to try to flirt her way into the final three, or for Jonathan to play the same game he did in the Cook Islands where he betrayed everyone, and proved himself untrustworthy -- as did Jonny Fairplay, who told the worst lie ever to gain sympathy and forward his game.
Jeff feels the key to success for the favorites is: "How do I reinvent myself in a way that can fool people who've already played this game once?"
Every season "Survivor" producers try to mix the game up a little bit to keep it fresh for the audience at home, but also to add a new element for the players. This season, Exile Island will be back with a twist. Each week, one person from each tribe will be sent to the island, which means that members from the opposing tribes will have the opportunity to get to know each other before they merge -- and possibly form cross-tribe alliances.
But that isn't the only change. There will also only be one hidden Immunity Idol and it will be located on Exile Island. So you have two people, one idol. How will someone find the idol without the other person knowing? If they find it together, who owns it? And how do you keep the other person from spilling the beans?
"I can tell you that the idol plays a major part in this season, capital letters," Jeff teases the upcoming season. "It has more impact, I think, than its ever had. And luckily for James -- James currently holds the title of biggest blunder in 'Survivor' history. Luckily for him, he only holds it for one season, because we have someone this season that makes an even bigger blunder. And I know when it happened that James was thinking, 'Thank God.'"
