The new thriller 'Vantage Point' scored a direct hit at the box office this weekend with an estimated $24 million in ticket sales.
In the thriller, MATTHEW FOX and DENNIS QUAID play Secret Service agents who are guarding the president (WILLIAM HURT) on a trip to Spain for a terrorism summit when chaos breaks loose. FOREST WHITAKER plays a bystander who takes video of events as they unfold. SIGOURNEY WEAVER, JAMES LeGROS and ZOE SALDANA also co-star.
Slipping to second was the sci-fi thriller 'Jumper,' with $12.7 million.
In 'Jumper,' HAYDEN CHRISTENSEN plays a young man who discovers that he has a genetic abnormality that allows him to teleport or "jump" anywhere in the world, but he also finds out that there is a war to annihilate "jumpers" like him. SAMUEL L. JACKSON, DIANE LANE and RACHEL BILSON co-star.
In a close third was family film 'The Spiderwick Chronicles' with $12.6 million. The fantasy flick follows a pair of twins (both played by FREDDIE HIGHMORE) and their sister (SARAH BOLGER) on adventures after their family moves to the magical Spiderwick Estate. MARY LOUISE PARKER, DAVID STRATHAIRN, MARTIN SHORT, JOAN PLOWRIGHT and ANDREW McCARTHY co-star while NICK NOLTE and SETH ROGEN provide voices.
'Step Up 2 the Streets' stumbled a bit to place fourth with $9.8 million. The sequel to 2006's 'Step Up' follows a budding romance between dancers (BRIANA EVIGAN and ROBERT HOFFMAN) at the Maryland School for the Arts.
'Fool's Gold' dropped to fifth with $6.3 million. In the action-adventure flick, MATTHEW McCONAUGHEY and KATE HUDSON play a treasure-hunting couple on the brink of financial ruin and divorce when they discover a clue to a hidden fortune that rekindles their eight-year search to find the lost riches.
