"American Idol" contestant falls ill.

After Tuesday night's performance of a DOLLY PARTON classic, "American Idol" contestant DAVID COOK was taken to Cedars-Sinai hospital after it was decided he required medical attention.

"He had heart palpitations and high blood pressure towards the end of the show," executive producer NIGEL LYTHGOE said in a call to promote "Idol Gives Back," airing Wednesday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m. on FOX. "He went to Cedars-Sinai and saw a private doctor and was given some medication to lower his blood pressure and then returned to the hotel shortly afterwards."

When asked if there is a contingency plan in place for any contestants who may not be able to sing on "American Idol"'s performance show, Lythgoe explained, "It only happened once and that was in the UK and we gave him a week out."

The trouble started after David's rendition of "Little Sparrow," in which he looked and sounded confident as usual. He appeared fine during the judge's comments, smiling and thanking PAULA ABDUL for her compliments on his new haircut. But the rocker was missing in action during a performance of "No Air" by JORDIN SPARKS and CHRIS BROWN that was being taped for a later broadcast.

"No, he [is not continuing to receive treatment], he received it last night," Lythgoe said of David's current condition.
