America gets a voice in the weight-loss show's season finale.
When "The Biggest Loser" airs its penultimate episode next Tuesday, April 8, the Final 4 -- ALISON VINCENT, KELLY FIELDS, MARK KRUGER and ROGER SCHULTZ -- will be hit with an all-new twist in the game. This season, America will decide who the third finalist will be by voting online. They will chose between the two "Losers" who fall below the yellow line on that night's episode.
"Every season we are looking to keep it fresh," says executive producer MARK KOOPS. "We really felt that after this journey all four were deserving of an opportunity to make it to the finale. What better way than to let the fans who have followed the incredible tales of transformation over 15 weeks have a voice in that process?"
Trainers JILLIAN MICHAELS and BOB HARPER aren't greeting this new element with quite the same enthusiasm as Mark, and expressed their concerns in a phone call, especially because they feel that the contestants may have played the game differently, if they had known American would have a voice in the selection of the Final 3.
"I think it is a tricky thing, because America hasn't seen everything that these four contestants have gone through," Bob points out. "I am kind of uncomfortable about it, because [America doesn't] have all the information."
And Jillian adds, "I was disappointed because 'The Biggest Loser' is not a popularity contest. It is about numbers."
Mark defends his decision, claiming that by letting America vote for the third finalist, he isn't turning "The Biggest Loser" into a popularity contest -- rather, he's making the show current by allowing it to be interactive.
"There is not one of [the four finalists] who is not deserving of being in the Final 3 with the effort they put in -- the record-breaking results we have seen in many cases," he explains. "The show is about inspiring the wider public. If someone falls below the yellow line, but they have been an inspiration, give them a chance. Just because they had one bad week out of 15, should they go home?"
The results of the voting will be announced on "The Biggest Loser" Finale on Tuesday, April 15, at 8 p.m. on NBC.
