It was Rock and Roll Hall of Fame night on "American Idol."

Only DAVID COOK, DAVID ARCHULETA, JASON CASTRO and SYESHA MERCADO remain in the "American Idol" competition. This week's theme is songs from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Each of the Final Four had to select two songs from the hallowed institution for tonight's performances.

David Cook chose DURAN DURAN's "Hungry Like the Wolf" to get things going. RANDY JACKSON commented, "One of the things that I am interested in tonight is to see is what songs you choose. That was okay, but I am looking to see who is bringing the mad, hot vocals." PAULA ABDUL declared, "That left me with a big appetite. To watch you grow and flourish has been remarkable." SIMON COWELL said, "David, I thought it was good. I know where Randy is coming from. It was a little copy cat. Not what you did in previous weeks, where you made it your own, but is it good enough to get to next week? Yes."

Syesha tackled the TINA TURNER rendition of "Proud Mary." Randy told her, "I am laughing because what a difference a couple of weeks makes. This is the third week in a row that Syesha has shown up and she is in the zone. You are showing the heat late in the competition." Paula praised, "You look like a star. You started this competition as a pretty girl with a big voice. Now you are a magnificent woman with a big voice. Magic happens." Simon put a damper on the critiques, saying, "For me, I just thought it was a bad imitation of Tina Turner."

BOB MARLEY's "I Shot the Sheriff" was performed by JASON CASTRO. Randy commented, "Listen, dude: For me, that was a really karaoke Bob Marley. It was just okay. There was nothing special about it. At this point, you need to show that you deserve to be in the finals." Paula told him, "I will say on a positive note, I have never seen you perform to the audience more. I wasn't crazy about the performance or the song, but you are so real, your artistry shines through." Simon cautioned, "Jason, stand back. That was utterly atrocious. That was a song you do not touch. The performing and the singing was as bad as I have ever heard. This was like a first-round massacre."

DAVID ARCHULETA selected BEN E. KING's "Stand By Me." He made Randy very happy: "At least there is one guy who is trying to hit every time he hits the stage. He brought the hot-man vocals. That was hot." Paula agreed, and also pointed out, "We all forget you are way beyond your years." Simon said, "The truth is, David, if you had whistled, it would have sounded better than the last song. You were very well placed. Good choice of song. I thought you struggled at the end of it a little bit. In the grand scheme of things, I am going to call that as the best performance so far."

For his second song, David Cook chose THE WHO's "Baba O'Riley," which has never been performed before on the talent competition. Randy gave David a thumbs up, saying, "There is something a little different going on with you tonight. That is the David Cook I know. You have your trusty LES PAUL [guitar]. Shake whatever off. You were great." Paula enthused, "I just want more. I want more David Cook. I am humbled to sit here and see your soul." Simon simply said, "Welcome back David Cook."

Syesha belted SAM COOK's "A Change is Going to Come" for her second selection. Randy told her, "I liked your first song; this one I did not love as much. First of all, I didn't love the arrangement with the music or the vocals. Sam Cook is one of the best singers ever in life. You don't need to do anything special. [I felt you were] trying to make it something it wasn't." That said, Paula gave Syehsa a standing O. "I just want to hug you," she told the tearful singer. "You turned this into a super star performance." Simon also complimented her: "I am going to agree with Paula. I think Randy, will all due respect, got that completely wrong."

Round two for Jason was a performance of BOB DYLAN's "Tambourine Man." Randy's assessment was: "Jason is not in the zone tonight." Paula simply said, "It is what it is. At this point in the competition, you guys have solidified your niche, but it didn't blow us away." Simon's evaluation was: "I would pack your suitcase."

David Archuleta's second pick was ELVIS PRESLEY's "Love Me Tender." Randy declared, "Another great performance for you. You got it going on right now -- the hot vocals of the night." Paula added, "That was one of my favorite performances from you." Simon rated David the winner: "You didn't beat the competition tonight, you crushed the competition," he concluded.
