'Indiana Jones' second, 'Iron Man' still strong.
'Sex and the City' topped the box office this weekend, making $55.7 million and pushing blockbuster 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,' into second place, studio estimates showed.
The long-awaited Warner Bros. romantic comedy beat predictions by at least $30 million and studio estimates said theater audiences were comprised of about 85 percent women.
'Sex and the City' follows Carrie (SARAH JESSICA PARKER), Samantha (KIM CATTRALL), Charlotte (KRISTIN DAVIS) and Miranda (CYNTHIA NIXON), four years after the hit HBO series ended, as they continue to juggle jobs and relationships while navigating motherhood, marriage and Manhattan real estate.
'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,' the latest installment of the HARRISON FORD action blockbuster series, took in $46 million, on the heels of a strong opening the previous week.
'Iron Man' continued strong with $14 million during the weekend, with an overall total of $276.6 million after five weeks in the theater. In the movie directed by JON FAVREAU ('Elf,' 'Zathura'), ROBERT DOWNEY, JR. plays Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist and genius inventor whose captivity by insurgents motivates him to build a suit of armor to escape. 'The Strangers,' a suspense thriller starring LIV TYLER about a couple whose remote getaway becomes a nightmare when masked strangers invade, debuted at third place with $20.7 million.
Disney's fantasy flick 'The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian' finished fifth, bringing in an estimated $13 million over the weekend.
