MTV Movie Awards Go On Despite Fire

Despite a fire that raged for most of Sunday on the Universal Studios backlot, the show went on at the MTV Movie Awards at the Universal Amphitheatre that night.

The usually fun-filled and hip show didn't disappoint as host MIKE MYERS challenged R&B star CHRIS BROWN to a dance-off at the beginning of the show, which included the usual plethora of wacky skits and star sightings.

The sketches included Myers cross-dressing as a movie-set craft-services lady offering diet food to a pregnant JESSICA ALBA; a reunion between Myers and DANA CARVEY in a Wayne's World sketch; ROBERT DOWNEY JR. directed by BEN STILLER to abuse JACK BLACK for a viral video to promote their new movie 'Tropic Thunder'; and Myers playing a bizarre animal trainer named Bucky Eisenstein on the set with ELIJAH WOOD and JON FAVREAU.

TOM CRUISE took the stage to present the MTV Generation award to ADAM SANDLER. In introducing Sandler, Cruise cracked that his body of work "earned him an iconic status in frat houses, juvenile detention facilities and mental institutions," and added, "He liberated us from the assumption that it was not cool to punch old people," bringing to mind the scene in 'Happy Gilmore' when Sandler's character assaults BOB BARKER.

To accept the award, Sandler appeared on a platform that rose out of the stage, and played his guitar and sang an amended version of the song made famous by CARLY SIMON, "Nobody Does it Better." In Sandler's version, the song went: "Nobody does it better. Sometimes I wish someone could. Nobody does it quite the way I do. Why'd I have to be so good?"

When the performance, which included interpretive dances by Sandler buds ROB SCHNEIDER and KEVIN JAMES and girls in golden bikinis, ended, Sandler said, "Thank you all, that was fun. [That was the] most arrogant thing I've ever done. I appreciate everything over the years," before going on to thank his wife and family and the U.S. troops serving overseas.

To accept his award for Best Male Performance ('I am Legend'), WILL SMITH brought his son JADEN onstage with him, saying, "I was sitting there with my little man and I remembered that I was on this stage in 1988, so to be here today in 2008, I just really want to say, 'Thank you, guys. I haven't always made great movies, but I've been trying real hard.'"

JOHNNY DEPP won two seemingly opposite awards -- for Best Comedic Performance ('Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End') and Best Villain ('Sweeney Todd') -- and said upon receiving the first award, "I'm not really sure how this happened because you can ask anybody -- I'm not a very funny person. I'm not even remotely funny. This is very sweet, thank you so much for this."

Taking home the golden popcorn statuette for Best Movie was 'Transformers,' which was accepted by director MICHAEL BAY and star MEGAN FOX. More winners included SEAN FARIS and CAM GIGANDET (Best Fight, 'Never Back Down'), Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. (Best Summer Movie So Far, 'Iron Man'), ZAC EFRON (Best Breakthrough Performance, 'Hairspray'), and BRIANA EVIGAN and ROBERT HOFFMAN (Best Kiss, 'Step Up 2 the Streets').

Presenters taking the stage included CHARLIZE THERON, JASON BATEMAN, WILL FERRELLLIV TYLER, EDWARD NORTON, SETH ROGEN, JAMES FRANCO, SARAH JESSICA PARKER, JENNIFER HUDSON, STEVE CARELL, ANNE HATHAWAY, DWAYNE 'The Rock' JOHNSON, VERNE TROYER, DIDDY, LINDSAY LOHAN, BRENDAN FRASER, ANNA FARIS, KATHARINE McPHEE, RUMER WILLIS and RAINN WILSON.

Musical performers included COLDPLAY and THE PUSSYCAT DOLLS.

Famous faces in the audience included HEIDI MONTAG and SPENCER PRATT, PARIS HILTON and BENJI MADDEN, and RIHANNA (who sat with rumored main squeeze Chris Brown).
