Reporter says car airborne when it left the road.

ET has confirmed Oscar winner Morgan Freeman was in a car crash last night at 11:30 near his home town in rural Mississippi and had to be airlifted to Memphis. A spokesman for Memphis Medical Center tells ET that Freeman's "condition is serious."

We're told by the police that the accident happened when his 1997 Nissan Maxima went off the shoulder of the road and flipped over a few times.  The police also confirm there was a female passenger in the car with the actor and that the jaws of life were used to extract both her and Freeman from the car. It was a one-person car crash and there was no indication that alcohol was involved. 'The Dark Knight' star was talking after he was being airlifted from the scene.

Charleston Sun Sentinel reporter Clay McFerrin tells ET he believes Freeman's car was airborne when it left the road and dropped eight to ten feet into a ditch. He says Morgan was conscious and joking with the rescuer and even said to one on-looker trying to get a picture that there are "no freebies."

Meanwhile, ET has also learned Freeman is supposed to start production in early September on a new movie called 'The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle,' co-starring Pierce Brosnan and directed by Danny DeVito.
