ET has confirmed that soul singer Isaac Hayes died at his home today in Memphis at age 65. Sadly, the famed crooner recently finished shooting the movie 'Soul Men,' along with comic Bernie Mac, who also just passed away Saturday morning.
A Shelby County spokesman tells ET that around 1 p.m. authorities responded to a 911 call from inside Hayes' home. They found him on the basement floor unconscious next to a still-running treadmill. CPR was performed and he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died shortly after 2 p.m. Police say no foul play is suspected.
The hospital gave this statement to ET: "Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis is saddened to announce the death of Memphis legend and music icon Isaac Hayes at 2:08 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10. Our emergency room team's efforts to resuscitate him were not successful, and our hearts go out to his family and legion of fans worldwide."
Hayes won an Academy Award in 1971 for Best Original Song for 'Shaft,' as well as a Grammy for Best Original Score for the same movie.
"Isaac Hayes was a true renaissance man -- singer, songwriter, producer, session musician, actor, activist and more," Neil Portnow, president and CEO of the Recording Academy told ET. "The world has lost a true creative genius and a passionate humanitarian, but his indelible legacy will remain ever present. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends and all who were inspired by the man and his music."
He was also well-known for playing Chef on the adult animated comedy "South Park" in a role that was originally supposed to be a one-time appearance but eventually was made permanent. His character was killed off in "South Park" after his resignation from the show for religious reasons.
