It will be four husband-wife teams vs. four parent-child teams when "The Biggest Loser" returns to NBC for season six. The weight-loss hopefuls include a mother and daughter who were estranged for more than five years, a father with more life-threatening health issues than any contestant in the history of the show and parents who want to get healthy to be better examples to their kids -- including their four-year-old daughter who already outweighs their seven-year-old son.
"Something that strikes my heart very closely is the parents and their kids and how parents take responsibility for being the role model that brought their child to this point," says host Alison Sweeney, who is the mother of three-year-old Ben and expecting a second child -- a girl in January. "Seeing how they deal with, 'Okay, I am part of why you are here. I am part of the problem. Now let's both be part of the solution.' Obviously, emotions run high and these feelings go extremely deep. It creates an interesting environment."
Alison has been very open over the years about her struggle with weight, even writing a book, All The Days of My Life (So Far), which recounts her bouts of dieting in thinness-obsessed Hollywood. So she understands what these folks are going through. She feels the advantage that she has had is that living in Los Angeles and working in the TV industry, she has had the opportunity to learn about nutrition.
"It is frustrating and upsetting to welcome these people to campus and realize how little they know when the information is out there," the "Days of our Lives" star tells ET. "We are trying to be part of that solution."
Toward this goal, this season of "The Biggest Loser" will invite back Chef Rocco DiSpirito to give the contestants -- and viewers -- more insight into nutritional choices. He will also go shopping using the budget of an average American family to prove that you can eat healthy without breaking the bank.
"The Biggest Loser" premieres its sixth season on Tuesday, September 16 at 8 p.m. on NBC.
