Come on down, Bob Barker! Legendary "Price is Right" game show host Bob Barker returned to his alma mater in Springfield, MO in celebration of something really big! Is it a new toaster? A new luggage set? A new car? Well how about a brand new street name!? Drury University has re-named one of its streets Bob Barker Blvd. in honor of TV's most lasting game show host.
"I think Bob Barker Blvd. sounds so much better than Bob Barker Street, don't you?" the silver-haired host asked of the cheering crowd that had gathered together for the heartfelt dedication.
In July, the entire Springfield City Council unanimously voted for four blocks of Brower Street should to be re-named Bob Barker Blvd. in order to honor the man that seemed to know the price of everything.
Despite an interruption in his schooling to serve in the Navy during WWII, Barker graduated Drury College in 1947 with a degree in economics. Since then, he has given a great deal back to the school. This past year Barker, an avid animal rights activist, donated $1 million to Drury to start the Bob Barker Endowment Fund for the Study of Animal Rights.
After college he then began a career aimed toward hosting. After 15 years of hosting shows, Barker began on "The Price Is Right" in 1972 and he completed his hosting tour of duty in 2007. His 35 year, five-day-a-week run made him the longest running daytime host in TV history.
You can still see the game show that Bob Barker made a household name every weekday morning on CBS, now hosted by Drew Carey.
