You can't judge a book by it's cover! Despite her good looks and chart-topping success, Kellie Pickler says she battled a year-long depression.

The former "American Idol" contestant tells People that she battled depression and suffered severe side-effects to anti-depressants after struggling with family problems and an emotional breakup with hockey player Jordin Tootoo.

"Everything in my professional life seemed great," she says. "But in my personal life, I was just crumbling."

She reveals that taking anti-depressants made her "crazy," and her reactions to the medication led to her eventually stop taking them.
