Celebs come out to celebrate and enjoy Billy Elliot the Musical's opening night on Broadway! Mega-watt stars like Rosie O'Donnell, Kevin Spacey, and Mario Cantone join show creator Sir Elton John for the first night of Broadway's newest musical.
Billy Elliot the Musical is based on the British sleeper film 'Billy Elliot,' which hit theaters to rave reviews in 2000. The film caught the eye of many, including Sir Elton John, who decided to adapt it for the stage. The "Rocket Man" composed the music for the show, which has been playing in London's West End since 2005. The musical won four Laurence Olivier Awards -- the highest honor in British theatre -- and its success in England led John to bring it to the States.
The story follows a young boy who, in an unlikely turn of events, finds himself turning in his boxing gloves for dancing shoes much to the dismay of his tough-minded father. Set against the historic backdrop of the 1980s coal miners' strike in Northern England, the triumphant musical tells the tale of young Billy who battles against all odds to achieve his dream of becoming a dancer.
