Were Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer on a double date with Nicole Richie and Joel Madden?

"There was a lot of excited talk between the two girls" at the Sunset Towers Hotel last night, an onlooker told People. However, both couples were seated at separate tables. They took a break from their meal to chat for a bit, "with Nicole's head bobbing up and down as she talked to Jen," says the onlooker, who adds that when Nicole left she gave an "exaggerated, very happy wave" goodbye.

Besides a little social action, Jen & John were said to be enjoying a romantic late-night meal.

"They were positively glowing in the candlelight," the onlooker said. "You could see her classic 'Aniston smile' on her face."
