'The Day the Earth Stood Still,' a contemporary reinvention of 20th Century Fox's 1951 sci-fi classic, took the No. 1 spot at the box office this weekend.

The movie, also starring Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, John Cleese, James Hong, Jaden Smith and Kathy Bates, made $31 million over the weekend, studio estimates showed on Sunday.

Finishing at No. 2 after staying on top for two weeks was Warner Bros' romantic comedy 'Four Christmases,' which brought in an estimated $13.3 million. The film, starring Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn as an unmarried couple forced to make four reluctant Christmas visits to all sets of parents, has now made $88 million since opening the day before Thanksgiving.

In third place with an estimated $8 million was Summit Entertainment's 'Twilight,' a film about a teenage girl (Kristen Stewart) who risks everything when she falls in love with a handsome and mysterious vampire (Robert Pattinson). 'Twilight,' which cost $37 million to make, has so far earned an estimated $150.1 million in total gross.

Finishing at No. 4 was Disney's animated feature 'Bolt,' which brought in $7.5 million during its fourth weekend in release. The film, which uses the voices of John Travolta and Miley Cyrus, tells the story of a canine star of a fictional sci-fi/action show who begins to believe his powers are real.

20th Century Fox's epic 'Australia' -- starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman -- came in fifth with $4.3 million in estimated weekend earnings.
