Barack Obama celebrated the life of his late grandmother at a memorial service Tuesday afternoon in Hawaii.

The president-elect, dressed casually and wearing glasses, scattered the ashes of his grandmother into the water. Obama's wife Michelle and daughters Sasha and Malia joined him on the rocky shoreline, along with a small group of other family and friends.

Madelyn Dunham, Obama's grandmother, passed away from cancer two nights before her grandson was elected president. She was 86.
