ET is taking a look back at the biggest divorces of last year and looking ahead at whether 2009 will be another big year for Hollywood splits.
The biggest divorce news came at the end of of 2008 when the marriage of Madonna and Guy Ritchie unravelled in mid-October. It was thought that financial and custody issues could lengthen the divorce process, but OK! magazine's Laura Lane says the British courts had nearly made it official by year's end. "Surprisingly the divorce is almost done and everything will be finalized in early 2009," Lane said.
Earlier this month, Ivana Trump announced her separation from Rossano Rubicondi, whom she married last April. "This is her fourth husband, and she'll quickly get this over with in 2009," Lane said.
It was also a year of short marriages and one of those was the breakup of Kate Walsh and her husband Alex Young after just 15 months. Another example was Eddie Murphy and Tracey Edmonds, whose marriage after a ceremony in the South Pacific fell apart after only two weeks. "Come 2009, their wedding is ancient history, especially since it was never even legally binding," Lane said.
Will David Duchovny and Téa Leoni divorce in the new year? Their separation was revealed in October but sources have told ET the couple is making efforts to save their 11-year marriage.
Shania Twain's separation in May from music producer Robert 'Mutt' Lange could also land the country singer in divorce court next year.
Balthazar Getty and his wife Rosetta are currently separated and he had a fling with actress Sienna Miller, but no divorce filing has yet been reported for the couple.
And, just last month, "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" star Marg Helgenberger separated from Alan Rosenberg, her husband of 19 years. Helgenberger's rep says simply that the two "have decided to take some time apart."
