Jon Lovitz is prepping for the grand opening of his new comedy club on CityWalk at Universal Studios Hollywood on May 28, and the former "Saturday Night Live" and "Newsradio" funnyman is giving us an exclusive sneak peek!
"I don't want to come to a place that's dark and dank and depressed and black; a lot of people say comedians are depressed, and I'm not," Jon tells ET. "I'm up, I'm happy, I want to have fun, I want to enjoy my life."
Rather than recreating the usual comedy club motif, Jon's creating an uplifting, Hawaiian-style paradise, from strategically placed sand dunes and palm trees to waitresses that smell like tanning oil. He'll even offer massages! The new three-story, 400-seat club will also incorporate live music in addition to various standup comics - famous and up-and-coming -- and Jon promises that the food won't be an afterthought, it'll be delicious!
"The food's going to be fantastic," he says. "You'll hear the beach, you'll smell the cocoa butter on the waitresses, and there'll be daiquiris and Pina Coladas -- it's just going to be a real fun atmosphere. The whole idea is for everybody to have a great time.
"You'll swear you were at the beach, except there won't be any water," he continues. "Not the tar part; not like the birds washing up and the oil slicks, not that part. There won't be any kids stepping on your face."
The Jon Lovitz Comedy Club is Jon's first venture into nightclub ownership and he plans to perform regularly there, including opening night, which will be a fundraiser for the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. Faith Kates Kogan, the organization's president of the board of directors, has been a friend of Jon's for almost 25 years. Next Modeling Management will co-host the gala benefit, with many celebrities expected to attend.
"It feels good to be able to something like that, and a lot of great women who were comedians died from [cancer], like Gilda Radner and Madeline Kahn," he says. "The whole point is to raise money for a cure and also for early detection."
