Candace Cameron Bure is a familiar face to TV audiences, having spent eight years on the hit ABC series, "Full House," playing D.J. Tanner. Now Candace is making a return to series TV in ABC Family's "Make It or Break It," and she weighs in on the child actor controversy, reminisces about "Full House" and gives ET the inside scoop on her new series.

ET: What was it about "Make It or Break It" that made you decide to return to series television, after being a full-time mom for so many years?

Candace Cameron Bure: My husband [Valeri Bure] retired from playing hockey. That opened up the door for me to return to work, because it is important for one of us to be home with our kids full time. When ABC family came to me with "Make It or Break It," I wasn't planning to go back to [a series]. Because of the schedule, I didn't want to work that much. But I loved the concept of the show. The fact that it is based in competitive sports [gymnastics], was an instant connection for me, because I have been living in the sports world for the past 13 years with my husband being a professional hockey player. I could relate on so many levels to what it takes to live in that world. I like the character they presented to me. Also, it was such a large cast that the work week was actually minimal for me.

ET: You started working really young. Is that something else you relate to with the gymnasts in the series?

Candace Cameron Bure: To a degree. I had so much fun working when I was a child. My parents made sure it was fun for me. When you are an athlete, you know it is work. It takes a whole lot of dedication, commitment and sacrifice. I think that athletes have to sacrifice a whole lot more than child actors do.

ET: There is a lot of controversy now with Jon and Kate's show, and former child star Paul Petersen is getting involved, do you think working as a child affected you? So many former child stars end up with substance abuse problems. Can you talk about your personal experience?

Candace Cameron Bure: I had a wonderful experience in the business. I know that some of the reasons I didn't get mixed up in drugs or alcohol, or fall into the traps that some of the other kids do, is that my parents were there every day. They put such an important value on our family as a whole, not the entertainment industry. We weren't allowed to participate in a lot of the other things that were going on, other than the work itself.

I think you can navigate through this business as a child actor and come away from it having a wonderful experience, but it all depends on the people who are around you, supporting you. [It is important that] they have your best interest at heart and are not looking to make you successful, or making you a celebrity, or making a lot of money.

ET: Do you have a favorite episode or scene from "Full House"?

Candace Cameron Bure: One of my favorite episodes was "The Love Letter." It was an episode where someone wrote a love note and it got passed through the house and everyone thought someone was in love with them.

ET: Are you in touch with any of the other cast members?

Candace Cameron Bure: I am in touch with pretty much everyone from the show. I talk to Bob Saget and David Coulier a lot.

ET: What are you hoping people get when they watch the new series?

Candace Cameron Bure: I hope they are going to be fairly entertained. Because we have a lot of teenage girls on the show, we have a lot of drama in terms of the relationships that the characters have. Not only is the show about gymnastics, it is about relationships. It follows each family and how they deal with the competitive sports world. If you love sports, or gymnastics, you will love the show, but it is also a good teen drama.

ET: Are your children around that age?

Candace Cameron Bure: My children are 10, 9 and seven, so they are too young to watch the show, because it deals with teen topics and sex, and my kids aren't quite there yet.

ET: But it is on ABC Family, so was that a consideration for you in accepting the job?

Candace Cameron Bure: Absolutely. ABC Family felt like a great fit for me, because having family-friendly content is important to me, but there are still different age levels of what is appropriate for families and younger children. "Full House" still runs five or six times a day on ABC Family as well.

ET: Do you still get recognized?

Candace Cameron Bure: I still get recognized a whole lot. People who recognize are my generation or older. For the younger kids, "Full House" seems like a new series to them. They don't recognize me. They don't have a clue it was shot 20 years ago. To see me as an adult, they are not putting two and two together.

ET: Would you take part if there was a "Full House" reunion?

Candace Cameron Bure: I would love to be a part of a reunion, if they had one. I don't think they will. We have our own little reunion every summer.
