Remember their names! Newcomers Naturi Naughton, Kay Panabaker, Kherington Payne, Asher Book and Walter Perez are on the verge of serious 'Fame.' Once the world sees their re-imagined version of the classic '80s film of the same name this weekend, the game could change for them -- and ET finds out if they're ready for the spotlight!
In theaters everywhere this Friday, 'Fame' follows a talented group of dancers, singers, actors, and artists over four years at the New York City High School of Performing Arts and also stars Kelsey Grammer, Megan Mullally, Bebe Neuwirth, Charles S. Dutton and original cast member Debbie Allen.
There are elements from the original Alan Parker film that are carried over, including Irene Cara's two big songs, which Naturi gets to sing.
"To recreate [these classic songs] -- not just 'Out Here on My Own' but the 'Fame' song -- wow, the pressure," says Naturi. "Irene did such an amazing job with it. … I was a huge fan, so when I heard I would be singing those songs … I worked extremely hard. I can't wait for the world to see how you can do something in a new way, and make it your own."
So, have the girls seen the original film? "I think we all grew up knowing it and loving it, but once we found out we were auditioning for it, we went back and did our homework," says Kherington.
"We tried to make our own version; we're not trying to actually remake the original," says Kay. "It's kind of our own, our generation's stamp on it -- but it's still nerve-wracking because people are going to try to compare it."
"I look at it as a privilege and a honor to bring something so iconic and so classic to this new generation," says Naturi, "because if it affected so many people in the '80s in a great way -- positive and inspiring -- we hope that our reinvention of it will affect them the same way."
And is 'Fame' going to change things for these young up-and-comers?
"Family's been a huge support in keeping me humble and grounded," Asher tells ET. Although he's had a taste of certain entertainment industry opportunities, he advises, "Just to know your opportunities and the blessings that you have and these doors [that] keep opening -- you have to really be thankful for them."
