Victoria Beckham and her ten-year-old son Brooklyn visited Clay County, Kentucky this week to better understand childhood poverty, promote equal opportunity and to bring attention to Save the Children's U.S. Programs.

"Seeing Save the Children's innovative programs in action, I know that we can begin to reverse the childhood poverty crisis," says the former Spice Girl. "I'm pleased Brooklyn is learning that by helping and joining other children he can play a role in making his generation the greatest yet."

One in six children in America lives in poverty, and Clay County is one of the poorest counties in America, resulting in poor cognitive and emotional development, illiteracy and obesity.

Victoria and Brooklyn participated in a number of Save the Children programs, including an after-school reading/healthy snack program at Manchester Elementary School, where they conducted a soccer lesson and gave away Adidas shoes and backpacks; at Big Creek Elementary School they participated in a book bag exchange and read their favorite children's book, Duck in the Truck; and they made individual home visits providing literacy and nutrition tools to parents.

"What I saw in Clay Country was the hope and promise inherent in every child," says Victoria. "That's why we have to make sure every single child has a fair and equal start in life."

Save the Children's U.S. Programs serve 50,000 children in nearly 200 of our country's poorest and most remote communities, with a strong track record of preparing young children to succeed in school, boosting reading scores and teaching healthy lifestyles.
