The Mamas and the Papas singer Michelle Phillips opens up for the first time about the incest allegations Mackenzie Phillips has made about Michelle's late ex-husband John Phillips.

"I respect John," she tells our Mark Steines. "I will always respect him. I respect him as a musician and a man."

Michelle does admit to having problems with her ex but when it comes to Mackenzie's allegations, Michelle comes to John's defense.

"You don't know what she's gone through and neither do I," Michelle says. "And if these accusations were going to be made, they should have been made while John was alive."

Michelle goes on to say she refuses to get drawn into the controversy and that she hopes people focus on John's musical talents.

"John isn't here to address any of that -- we don't know what happened, but the music stands and speaks for itself."

But talking about The Mamas and the Papas' musical legacy is what Michelle prefers, like the first time the group performed on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in 1966.

"Ed Sullivan didn't have the slightest idea who the 'Mama and the Papas' were," she tells Mark. "And he was so intrigued by us."

The Mamas and the Papas performance is just one of the many seen in "Ed Sullivan's Rock and Roll Classics -- The 60s," which airs on PBS stations this month and next month.
