Confetti rained down on the dance floor in celebration of new "Dancing with the Stars" champion Donny Osmond and partner Kym Johnson. After a long season full of injuries and flu, but also the forging of new friendships and memorable routines, Donny and Kym rose above the other 15 couples.
All of the contestants who had been eliminated in earlier rounds laced their shoes back up to perform one last dance. Familiar faces from previous seasons, such as Jeffrey Ross, Adam Carolla, Cloris Leachman, Jerry Springer, Jerry Rice, and Steve Wozniak, also made cameo appearances. Chart-topper Whitney Houston entertained with two songs, "Million Dollar Bill" and "I Wanna Dance with Somebody."
Other highlights from the evening included NFL Hall of Fame inductees Jerry Rice and Michael Irvin duking it out to a Paso Doble with a golden football to earn a coveted mirror ball ring. Len Goodman evaluated, saying, "We've discussed it…you've got to be game ready…and we all think that Michael, you are the winner. However…we decided that the battle of the bodies went to Jerry." Both athletes were presented with a ring. Jeffrey Ross returned to induct a new member to the "Loser's Club." As a result of his elimination in the first round, Ashley Hamilton was bestowed with the honor.
Finalists Donny & Kym, Kelly Osbourne & Louis Van Amstel, and Mya & Dmitry Chaplin had one last opportunity to impress the judges by performing an encore routine of their choice.
With mom Sharon, dad Ozzy, and brother Jack rooting her on, Kelly and partner Louis took to the dance floor for their Viennese Waltz. Judge Len Goodman sincerely commented, "Of all the celebrities we've had on the show, I will miss you the most." Bruno Tonioli recapped, "You may come from rock and roll royalty, but you have earned your place as a ballroom princess." Carrie Ann Inaba came to the revelation that "of all the seasons, I don't know if anyone has ever touched me as much as you have when I watch you dance." The judges awarded their honorable effort with 26 points.
Mya and Dmitry jived their way to a score of 28. Bruno referred to her as "Mya the Magnificent. Sharp, slick. You never miss a beat." Calling her a "star," Carrie Ann said, "Every season we have somebody that sets the pace for the whole season…that has been you from day one." Len said she was "without doubt, fantastic."
Donny and Kym certainly left a lasting impression, earning a perfect score of 30 for their Argentine Tango. Carrie Ann remembers that throughout the competition, "You've graced us with some incredible show-stopping performances." Len continued with the rave reviews: "What you've never lost is your 100%, coming out here and performing." Seated next to ET's Mary Hart, sister Marie Osmond was on the sidelines to support her brother.
Ecstatic with his victory, Donny carried his wife from the audience to the dance floor. All the newly crowned champ could utter was, "Oh, yeah!" Mya gracefully accepted her second place finish, saying, "We were so happy to come this far…we had the time of our lives." Kelly responded to her third place finish, saying, "It's been the most beautiful amazing experience…thank you America...It's because of you that I've grown so much."
