Tim Allen steps behind the camera for the first time to direct and star in the hilarious comedy 'Crazy on the Outside,' in theaters January 8, and the new dad is about to embark on a multi-city comedy tour to introduce the film to audiences - and his first stop left our own Mary Hart in stitches!
"You'll laugh from top to bottom; you haven't seen that in a movie for a long time," says Tim about the romp which co-stars Sigourney Weaver, Ray Liotta, Kelsey Grammer, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Julie Bowen and J.K. Simmons. "It's been a passion for me for two years. It's just a big comedy. It's not like 'The Passion of the Christ' or anything like that."
The film follows Tim's character who, just released from jail, finds that reuniting with his crazy family may prove even tougher to survive than a three-year stint behind bars.
Tim plans to bounce from city to city, including Denver, Houston, Phoenix, Atlanta and St. Louis, starting December 1 to screen his movie - and he's going back to his stand-up roots to do it. Of course, being a new dad at 56 helps in terms of material.
"Having a baby is new fodder for an aging parent," he says about baby Elizabeth, who is eight months old. "Every day I'm so grateful to have that new person in my life. … I love the evolution of it. … I'm just much more involved in watching her develop. … I don't know what I just said. I sounded exactly like something on '60 Minutes' just now."
Tim also has two other big movies in the pipeline. 'Wild Hogs 2' starts shooting in Europe in May with John Travolta, Martin Lawrence and William H. Macy, and Tim says, "I'm very excited to be meeting up with the guys again." The film follows the fellas as they ride on a bachelor trip through Europe before Macy's character gets hitched.
Tim's mum on the plot of 'Toy Story 3' (in theaters June 18), however. He jokes that Pixar and Disney "will literally kill me" if he reveals any details, but he offers up, "It's wonderful; it's the best of the three," adding with a smile, "Too much Hanks in it, I will say that. Waaay too much Woody."
