The 34-year-old actress narrowly edged out her Captain America co-stars, Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, whose films earned $1.15 billion a piece.

Johansson's next potential blockbuster could be Ghost in the Shell, which was adapted from a Japanese film franchise. However, the decision to cast the native New Yorker instead of an Asian actress was met with criticism.

Director Rupert Sanders recently addressed the backlash while premiering the film's trailer at a special event last month.

"I think whenever you cast someone, someone's going to be critical of it," Sanders explained. "To me, I stand by my decision."

Sanders added that Johansson is "the best actress of her generation," and that he was "flattered and honored” to have her in the film.
