Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Open Up About Finding Balance and Avoiding Social Media in Rare Interview

The 30-year-old twins sat down with Net-a-Porter's 'The EDIT' magazine.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have been famous since they were six months old and built a billion-dollar fashion empire, but it’s not often that the young moguls share insight on their personal lives.

In a rare interview with Net-a-Porter's The EDIT magazine, the 30-year-old twins go on the record about finding a healthy balance between work and home life, avoiding social media, and inspiring women through fashion.

"I think we're lucky [working hard] comes quite naturally for us. We don’t need so much time to sit and think and ponder," said Mary-Kate, who married longtime love Olivier Sarkozy in 2015. "But then I have a husband, two step-kids and a life; I have to go home and cook dinner."

Even with a family and a busy career, the fashion designer makes sure to take time for herself.

"I ride horses on the weekends," she shared. "You find the thing that helps you relax and if you don't have it, you have to look for it. Or you get burned out and then you’re not productive."

Unlike most celebrities, Mary-Kate and Ashley don't use social media to connect with fans, which keeps them somewhat "sheltered" from the outside world.

"We don't dive into that whole world [of social media] and we don’t have Facebook, we've never been connected to our fans in that way," Ashley explained. "We've stayed quite sheltered in that sense."

The duo also dishes on the inspiration for their clothing line Elizabeth and James. "We talk about the mother and the daughter, the comfortable and sexy, masculine and feminine," Ashley detailed. "It's a balance of both."

Having grown up in the spotlight, Mary-Kate and Ashley experienced the pressure that some stars face to set trends on the red carpet.

"When we were younger, being in the public eye was almost part of our role and responsibility – to set the trends at that time or be ahead of fashion," noted Mary-Kate, before sharing that the twins' ultimate goal is to help women "feel however they want to feel."

"Every once in a while, we want to change our perfume or our haircut; we want to wear heels or flats," she added. "We just like to switch it up. That's the beauty of clothes."
