Sarah Michelle Gellar Reveals Struggle With Postpartum Depression, Calls for Political Action on Healthcare

The actress opened up about her past issues with depression following the birth of her daughter, and had a message of support for other new moms.

is opening up about her struggle with postpartum depression, sharing a message of support for other mothers who are dealing with their own emotional challenges and advocating for political outreach.

The actress and mother of two took to Instagram on Tuesday, to get candid about her experiences.

"Having kids is wonderful, and life changing, and rarely what you're prepared for. I love my children more than anything in the world," Gellar, 40, wrote alongside a sweet throwback photo of her holding her daughter, Charlotte, when she was just a baby. "But like a lot of women, I too struggled with postpartum depression after my first baby was born."

"I got help, and made it through, and every day since has been the best gift I could ever have asked for," she continued. "To those of you going through this, know that you're not alone and that it really does get better."

Gellar concluded her emotional post with a call to action for all those who "believe that postpartum depression should be covered by healthcare."

Gellar and her husband, actor Freddie Prinze Jr., welcomed Charlotte in September 2009. The couple welcomed their second child, son Rocky, in September 2012.
