Walking the red carpet with flip flops may be a faux pas, but when you’re Jason Mraz, it’s a fashion statement. The "I’m Yours" singer/songwriter performed his laid-back chart-topper which won Song of the Year at last night’s 27th Annual Pop Music Awards where songwriters and publishers behind the music of Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Flo Rida, Katy Perry, and Miley Cyrus were honored. The ceremony included performances by The All-American Rejects, Flo Rida, Jessi Alexander, and Patti Smith who was honored with the ASCAP Founders Award for her influence on rock music.
During her acceptance speech, Patti spoke to the importance of her ASCAP songwriting credits by revealing that royalty checks stemming from artists covering her hit song, "Because the Night Belongs to Lovers" helped sustain her financially after the death of her husband in 1994. She joked that she had “already been paid for that song.” She went on to thank her musicians, Lenny Kaye, Jay Dee Daugherty and Tony Shanahan, who started with the Patti Smith Group as far back as 1959 when she was a poet who became “frustrated” and wanted to hear music behind her spoken-word performances.
Additional awards were handed out for the most performed songs of 2009 including C. Tricky Stewart and Kuk Harrell for penning the 2010 Grammy for Song of the Year for Beyoncé’s "Single Ladies" as well as Al Shux and Janet J’Nay Sewell Ulepic who co-wrote Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ hit "Empire State of Mind" among others. The Songwriter of the Year award went to Lukasz “ Dr. Luke” Gottwald responsible for Britney’s "Circus," Katy Perry’s "Hot N Cold," Ke$ha’s "Tik Tok" and Miley’s "Party in the USA."
