The search is over to find a fitting female lead to star opposite Daniel Craig in the Hollywood adaptation of 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.'

ET confirms that Rooney Mara has been cast opposite the 007 star to play the pivotal role of goth computer hacker Lisbeth Salander in director David Fincher's take on the first book of Stieg Larsson's hugely popular Millennium Trilogy. Craig takes on the role of journalist Mikael Blomkvist, who is asked to solve a decades-old mystery.

Mara stars in Fincher's upcoming fall film 'The Social Network,' in theaters October 1, which chronicles the behind-the-scenes, high-stakes intrigue of the making of Facebook. Her other credits include 'Youth in Revolt' and the recent 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' remake.

'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' begins shooting next month in Sweden, scheduled for worldwide release December 21, 2011. 'The Girl Who Played With Fire' and 'The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest' are the other two films of the proposed trilogy.
