'The Resident' Sneak Peek: Emily VanCamp Gives an Inspiring Speech in the Series Premiere (Exclusive)

Fox

ET exclusively debuts a sneak peek from the Jan. 21 series premiere.

Get to know the doctors on Fox's new medical drama, The Resident.

The story kicks off when an idealistic young intern, Dr. Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal), gets a dose of reality on his first day at Chastain Memorial Hospital shadowing Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry), a third-year resident with a knack for practicing medicine in unconventional ways. The series also follows legendary Chief of Surgery Dr. Solomon Bell (Bruce Greenwood) and a dedicated nurse, Nicolette (Emily VanCamp).

In ET's exclusive sneak peek from the series premiere airing later this month, Nicolette checks up on Devon after he makes one of his first big medical mistakes and struggles to cope with the repercussions. "Medicine isn't practiced by saints, Devon, it's a business," Nicolette tells Devon, to which he confesses his intern experience "isn't what [he]'d imagined."

That's when Nicolette tells him a story about her late mother, who died at age 38 when her lung collapsed during surgery after doctors discovered something small in her lung. "She got pneumonia and five days later, she was dead," Nicolette reveals. "This happens all the time, Devon. Medical error is the third leading cause of death in the United States, after cancer and heart disease. They don't want us talking about that."

After Devon asks why she still shows up to work at the hospital, Nicolette has an answer that'll make you want to root for her: "Because it's personal to me and there's plenty of good doctors and nurses trying to do the good thing. I'm just trying to be one of them." Watch ET's exclusive clip below.

The Resident debuts Sunday, Jan. 21 after the NFC Championship Game at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT, before premiering in its regular time slot on Monday, Jan. 22 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
