Sandler, Rogen & Apatow are 'Funny People'

Canvas background demo

Adam Sandler is teaming up with funnyman Seth Rogen for an all-new Judd Apatow comedy, and only ET's Mark Steines was on the set to get the lowdown from these 'Funny People' -- and the dirt on Sandler and Apatow as real-life roommates!

"When we were roommates, Adam was a rising star … and I was a struggling young comedian who was not a rising star; It was depressing," said Apatow, who has gone on to become the driving force behind such movies as 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin,' 'Knocked Up' and 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall.'

"I was a sick young man and he knows that," joked Sandler, recalling some of their wilder days back around '90. "We do have funny stories about each other. We've both seen each other naked a lot."

In theaters July 31, 'Funny People' stars Sandler as a famous comedian who has a near-death experience, while Rogen said, "I'm just kind of a young, lame comic, and he hires me to be his assistant/emotional outlet."

"[Sandler's character] gets a terminal disease, and then he remarkably gets better and has a nervous breakdown from getting better," elaborated Apatow. "So a lot of the movie is about what do you do if you don't die. That's the hook."

The film also stars Eric Bana, Jason Schwartzman, rapper-turned-actor RZA and reunites Apatow with Jonah Hill and his actress/wife Leslie Mann in their third comedy together. It's the first time he's has directed Sandler.

"We have worked together, but this is the first time that I get to boss him around, which really was what I was looking for," quipped Apatow. "There hasn't really been film in the camera, just an excuse to humiliate him and dominate him."
