Actor Tom Bosley, known for his role as Mr. Cunningham on "Happy Days," died today, October 19, in Palm Springs, Calif.

Oscar-winning producer Ron Howard said of the passing of his former TV dad, "I'm so saddened by the loss of our wonderful Tom Bosley. Remarkable on so many levels, Tom's insight, talent, strength of character and comic timing made him a vital central figure in the 'Happy Days' experience. A great father and husband, and a wonderful artist, Tom lead by example, and made us all laugh while he was doing it. My last conversations with Tom reflected the love of life and peace of mind that he always maintained throughout his full and rewarding life. I miss him already."

Henry Winkler, who played Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli on "Happy Days," said of his costar, "He played our TV dad and was very much like our dad on the set. As a matter of fact, he helped us buy our first home as we did the show. ... We all stayed pretty close as a family."

"Happy Days" creator Garry Marshall commented on Bosley's passing, saying, "Tom was a talented professional in front of the camera and behind the scenes. He provided a positive influence over all of the young actors on 'Happy Days.' Audiences will never forget the lovable Howard Cunningham who made us laugh on Tuesday nights. He was a good friend. I will miss him. Comedy will miss him."

Actor Scott Baio, who played Charles 'Chachi' Arcola on the hit show, said of Bosley, "He was such a nice man … totally. I learned a lot from him in the business and in life. He was just like the dad he played on TV. … He will be missed."

In addition to "Happy Days," Bosley worked on the 1972 show "Wait Till Your Father Gets Home" with Willie Aames. Ames commented on his costar to ET, saying, "Tom was everyone's father in the funniest way. He was always most interested in whether you [were] buying or leasing a car or any other item. And he would start out conversations by telling you how to best save your money. He would end every conversation with a smile and a hug."

Bosley passed away at age 83.
