Within five months of each other, two of the biggest names in television, Mary Hart and Regis Philbin, announced their departure from the TV shows that they've hosted for over 20 years, and on Monday Mary scored the first candid interview with Regis after announcing his retirement when they met over 10,000 feet in the air by pure happenstance.
"I couldn't believe Mary Hart and I reunited," said Regis during Mary's first interview with the TV personality since giving his resignation.
The two TV titans are being honored at the NATPE (National Association of Television Program Executives) Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Awards in Miami on Tuesday and were surprised to find out they were traveling on the same flight.
After announcing his exit from "LIVE! with Regis and Kelly," Regis admitted, "We don't know what we're going to do next," so Mary offered an idea.
"Well, immediately upon hearing that you were leaving the show, my director called from the booth and he said, 'That's it, Regis and Mary need to get together on a morning show.'"
The Brandon Tartikoff Awards only acknowledges four figures every year for their outstanding contribution to the television industry.
Regis' wife Joy joked that even with all his accolades, a show with Mary might be Regis' big break, saying, "Life is looking up for you, Regis."
