Wanda Sykes Opens Up About Her Breast Cancer

Comedian Wanda Sykes sat down with Ellen DeGeneres for an upcoming episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Sykes opened up about how she recently discovered that she had breast cancer during a breast reduction in February 2011.

"It wasn't until after the breast reduction that in the lab work, the pathology, that they found that I had DCIS in my left breast. I was very, very lucky because DCIS is basically stage zero cancer. So I was very lucky. But cancer is cancer," she said in the episode, airing Monday, September 26, 2011.

Despite the seriousness of the issue, Sykes joked that she had a double mastectomy instead of having routine check-ups every three months because "I'm not good at keeping on top of stuff. I'm sure I'm overdue for an oil change and a teeth cleaning already."
