Who was sent packing tonight on American Idol

Last night, Hollie Cavanagh, Skylar Laine, Joshua Ledet, Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez tackled songs from the 1960s and the British songbook but with five seriously talented individuals left in the game, it was anybody's guess as to who would get the boot from the competition.

Lending a welcome reprieve to Thursday's inevitable elimination, Idol winner-turned-country superstar Carrie Underwood performed the title track from her CD Blown Away. Also, Coldplay took to the stage to perform songs from their new album Mylo Xyloto.

Although Hollie seemed to make some major traction on Wednesday, it appeared the performance couldn't keep her safe from the bottom two (again), and the young singer was chosen to suffer with friend Skylar Laine.

Jennifer Lopez called the night a "toss up," telling the two, "You put on a amazing show for America every week… Losing anybody is very tough right now."

"The top five has never been better than this," praised Steven Tyler. "Thank you for letting us feel your music."

Ultimately Skylar was revealed to be leaving the competition tonight, an announcement prompting tears from Hollie who found it near impossible to unlock herself from her goodbye hug.

Skylar said her goodbyes with a lively performance of her idol country singer Miranda Lambert's Gunpowder and Lead.
Tune in next week as the final four compete once more when American Idol returns Wednesday on FOX.
