Inside 'The X Factor' Auditions

The X Factor officially began its season 2 reboot with judges Britney Spears and Demi Lovato late last month, and the fabulous twosome took a moment out of their three day stopover in Oakland, California to let us in on what we can expect when the show premieres this September.

"I'm really just looking for something that shows spark and spunk," explains Spears of her particular approach to weeding through the talent pool, adding that she's specifically keeping her eye out for a person (or group) that's "meant to do what they're doing and it shows."

The 30-year-old superstar says the most difficult part of her job is judging the young'uns in the audition process, as she herself began her career as a child performer.

"Sometimes it's kind of hard because I know what they've been through," says Spears. "It's just such a subtle and delicate situation when they're that young, you know, so you just have to use constructive criticism and be there for them and show them support."

Lovato confesses she shares the same concerns, but says that regardless, honesty is always the best policy when relaying criticism to certain X Factor hopefuls.

"Sometimes I worry that I'm too honest and too harsh by some of the things that I say but I don't mean it out of a bad place; I'm not trying to make fun of anybody," Lovato explains. "I'm not considered the 'nice judge' and I'm not considered the 'mean judge'…It's really hard for me to, you know, smile while someone is performing if they're horrible. I have to be super, super honest and sometimes I feel really bad about it."
