Anne Burrell Previews 'Worst Cooks' Premiere

By

Chefs Anne Burrell and Bobby Flay are returning to teach the Worst Cooks in America on Food Network this Sunday night, and Anne is dishing on the show with ET. Read on for our Q & A with Anne.

ETonline: What is your favorite aspect of teaching someone how to cook who has no experience?

Anne Burrell: When you sort of see that lightbulb start to come on and they start to get it. ... [When] they're like, 'Oh wait, I'm supposed to do this since I learned that the last time,' and then they start to think like a cook, you're like, 'Oh my God, this is actually working! They're getting it!'

ETonline: What dish should people who don't know how to cook start with?

Burrell: Something chicken. Actually, quite honestly, I think they should start with something that they like, that isn't too difficult. And I always recommend, start simple and master that, and then move on to something that's more difficult. Start simple, gain your confidence, become a rockstar… I mean, quite honestly ... to have a simple dish done extremely well is [better than] having a really hard dish not done well.

ETonline: A lot of people these days don't really cook at home, what do you think is the main reason for that?

Burrell: Quite honestly, I believe that we're sort of having a generation now that a lot of people came from families where both parents were out of the house working, and so we didn't have the stay at home moms that there were from past generations. So because there wasn't someone home cooking all the time, I believe that people just go for what's more convenient.

ETonline: What advice would you give to the average person, who has a busy life, but wants to work some home-cooked meals into their life?

Burrell: Pick out a few simple things that you know you can do well, and you know, make enough for a couple of days. So maybe then you can have some leftovers, or you have stuff for lunch. Or if you're going to make a pot of soup, make a big pot of soup, and if you want to, freeze a little, and then you can be like, ‘Oh look, in a couple of weeks I have this again and I already made it. … You have like, a big pot of pasta sauce, or you're like, mmmm my meatballs are in the freezer, I'm gonna whip these out. It's like, nice little surprises.

ETonline: At this time of year a lot of people are looking to make comfort foods. What's your favorite dish to make on a chilly [winter] day?

Burrell: I'm always a big fan of a big pot of chicken soup. I'm always a big fan of a big pot of Bolognese [sauce]. … And a roasted chicken dish, I'm always happy about.

Watch above for a sneak peek of the show, premiering on Sunday, February 17 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Food Network.
