After making her acting debut in the comedy This is 40, ET caught up with actress Heather Locklear and rock star Richie Sambora's teenage daughter Ava before she makes her television debut.

Sambora will make her small-screen debut in an upcoming guest role on the Disney Channel series Good Luck Charlie. While she has celebrity parents to fall back on, the young actress reveals that she earned the role on her own merit.

"I auditioned for it and it was actually amazing," Sambora said on the set of Good Luck Charlie. "I was so happy to get it, and when I saw the call for the audition, I was like, 'There's a good feeling about this.'"

Although her parents didn't land her the role, she said they offered her some simple-but-important advice as she embarks on her acting career.

"My mom said, 'Do your homework,' and my dad said, 'Have fun,'" she divulged.

Locklear, best known for her role on Melrose Place, began working in television at age 19 and Sambora, guitarist of Bon Jovi, recorded his first album in his mid-20s, so they were both tentative about when to allow their daughter to pursue her acting career.

"My parents always supported me, they just said, 'Once you get to be this age you can do it,' and I did it and it was great," Sambora said.
